New Year, new angles

ferris wheel blog

It’s been a good 12 years since I was last on a Ferris wheel. Shooting from atop a moving Ferris wheel is challenging, especially at night, but shooting the wheel itself was easy… in fact, I was almost so distracted by the angles and LED-lit scaffolding that I forgot to look down.
Photo taken at Kakaako Park’s New Year’s Eve 2012 Party of the Year.

Morrissey!

Speaking of strange cats… well, I’ve been listening to Morrissey and The Smiths for going on 12 years now, and getting to see him live in concert at Kakaako Park on May 19 was a real treat, cattle mutilation videos and all. Just glad no one brought a hot dog to the show. He’s 52 now, but the man still has quite a voice and quite a stage presence.

JD Samson

Taken at the launch of Ruby SoHo, SoHo Mixed Media Bar on May 18. I had the chance to do a short, impromptu photoshoot with the super-cool JD Samson of Le Tigre, and did my best to capture a small part of hir quirky personality. With all the talk of gender politics that JD’s name always raises, I thought this one was kind of fun.

5th Era Day 47: Charmed & Dangerous

It’s rare that I go out on Sunday night, but a belly dance show at The Venue, starring almost every belly dance troupe on the island, plus the famous, talented and stunning Rachel Brice (who knew a woman could do those things with her stomach…my god!) was definitely incentive. The place was packed, so it’s a wonder I managed to get as many decent shots as I did… this one, of the ladies from the Devi Dance Company, kind of summed up for me the elegant, deadly allure of the belly dancer.

5th Era Day 46: Vinyl

As a (mostly former, now) DJ, I’ve always been rather indifferent to vinyl. It’s not easily acquired unless you have extra money to spare, it’s heavy and takes up a lot of room. I much prefer the easily stackable CD, or the MP3, which takes up no space at all but virtual space. Still, I have mad respect for those who spin vinyl and spin it well… like the house DJs at Legato, Lotus Downtown’s monthly vinyl house night.

5th Era Day 41: Contrasts

Happened to be out by the old Kawaiaha’o Church (built in 1842) near sunset when I looked up and saw that the skyscraper behind it was perfectly juxtaposed. This kind of contrast between the old and new is all over Honolulu, but usually I just don’t notice. I didn’t have a big camera with me, but the point & shoot did a decent job.

5th Era Day 31: Raver toys

Another nightlife one; I was at Livewire’s Winter White Party last night and took the chance to catch some shots of people playing with lasers, glowsticks and raver toys.

Tools used: Canon SLR 60D with Canon L-series 24-70mm lens, f/2.8, 1/2 exposure, 1000 ISO, no flash.

5th Era Day 26

One of my shooting assignments for the weekend was Pearl Ultralounge’s new electronica night. The lights and fog machine are new for Pearl, and I’ve never seen it quite like this before.

5th Era Day 18: Landscapes are boring

I often have trouble shooting daytime landscapes. No matter how gorgeous the scene in front of my eyes, when I look at a photo, I’m just not satisfied. I couldn’t not shoot this scene in Hawaii Kai, the view from the backyard of a party I was also shooting, but after I had, and stared at it critically for a minute or two, I realized that I’d much rather be shooting people, or macro, or motion :-P

Tools used: Canon SLR 60D with Canon L-series 24-70mm lens, f/3.5, 1/320 exposure, 125 ISO, no flash.

5th Era Day 17: Scaffolding

Finally done shooting First Friday, and I was walking back toward Mercury Bar when I took this. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to notice more, and make more of an effort to see the beauty in things. Hundreds of people must have walked under this scaffolding on Nuuanu Street, but the light and shadows, and the ubiquitous club flyers on each post (someone obviously went to a lot of trouble for that) immediately caught my eye.
